Labeling

Use labels to mark spectra or spatial regions that should be reviewed, identified, exported to datasets, or used as background classes for analysis.

Manage label types

Open Tools > Label types to create and edit label collections and classes.

Label types are shared with dataset and model workflows. Keep class names specific enough to be useful in datasets, model training, and result review.

Label lens

To create or review labels in Spectral Explorer:

  1. Open Catalog.
  2. Switch the lens to Label.
  3. Expand a source.
  4. Use Exploratory labels or Finalized labels.

Exploratory labels are workspace-level working labels. Finalized labels are intended for dataset and model workflows. Annotation labels may appear where annotation mode is available.

Drawing labels

When the Label lens is active, the canvas toolbar shows labeling controls:

  • Pointer for inspection and selection.
  • Point selection.
  • Lasso selection.
  • Label status selector.
  • Class selector, or annotation color selector when creating annotations.

Select the label status and class before drawing. Then use the point or lasso tool on the canvas. New labels appear under the selected source in the Label lens.

Import labels

In the Label lens, expand Exploratory labels and click the import button. The import dialog supports:

  • Shapefiles, including .shp, .shx, .dbf, and .prj files with the same base name.
  • GeoJSON or JSON.
  • KML.
  • TIF labels, with optional .tif.aux.xml metadata for classes.
  • ENVI label formats supported by the upload parser.

Imported labels are attached to the selected image source.

Label visibility

Visibility controls appear when labels are applicable to the active view:

  • In Map, label visibility controls can be used for visible map overlays.
  • In Inspect, label visibility is available for the current reference source.

The section-level visibility control toggles all labels in that section. Individual row controls toggle one label.

Label context menu

Right-click one or more labels to:

  • Change status.
  • Assign a class.
  • Edit label attributes.
  • Identify material.
  • Plot identified material matches.
  • Add the selection to a spectral library.
  • Create a filter mask from the label.
  • Delete labels.

When multiple labels are selected, context actions apply to the selected labels where supported.

Labeling with PCA

Generate PCA from Tools > Principal components analysis (PCA). After generation completes, select the PCA layer in Explore. The bottom dock opens a PCA tab for that layer.

Use the PCA chart controls to inspect clusters and create selections from related points. Labels created from PCA selections appear in the source tree just like manually drawn labels.

PCA tabs are dynamic. Selecting a PCA layer opens a tab; pin the tab if you want it to stay open while selecting other PCA layers.
